Ford engineer Zach Nelson has designed a ‘smart’ shift knob that vibrates when it’s time to shift gears.

The new shift knob was created using a 3D printer and uses the vibrating mechanism from an Xbox 360 controller.

Nelson’s design is able to communicate the car’s on-board diagnostic system to let you know when to shft gears.

The shift knob can be used to teach beginners how to drive a manual and can even aid more experienced drivers by letting them know when to shift to get the best fuel efficiency or for the best performance.
