Artist Phillip K. Smith III recently completed an installation titled “Lucid Stead” in the desert landscape of Joshua Tree, California, where he transformed an old homesteader shack into a wonderful optical illusion.

By selectively introducing pieces of mirrors to the exterior of the shack, he creates the intriguing image of a partly invisible house whose remaining wooden roof and planks seem to be floating in mid-air.

Playing with reflected light and shadow, the installation is inspired by “the quiet and the pace of change of the desert”—anyone who unknowingly stumble upon this modified building may take it for a stunning mirage.

At night, the shack is illuminated from the inside with bright neon lights, making for a completely different but similarly striking picture.
