A restaurant in the village of Abu Ghosh, on the outskirts of Jerusalem, has a simple request of its patrons: switch off your phones and enjoy your meal.
The owner, Jawdat Ibrahim, says that smartphones have destroyed the culture of eating. He was dismayed to see “groups of friends or married couples sitting in silence, staring at their screens and ultimately asking him to reheat their food”, rather than appreciating the food and having a conversation with friends.
Having struck a windfall in an Illinois state lottery, Ibrahim is able to offer his patrons a half-priced meal if they adhere to his rule—phones have to be completely switched off. So far, almost all of his customers have taken advantage of the offer, re-discovering the art of having a good mealtime conversation.
