In Poignant Photo Series, Convicts Write Letters To Their Younger Selves

After a friend was sentenced to 36 years in prison for a crime he has committed, photographer Trent Bell realized that all of us could make a bad decision that would ruin our lives.

Inspired by this epiphany, he embarked on the “REFLECT” photography project, where he shot portraits of several inmates at the Maine State Prison.

He also asked these inmates to write letters to their younger selves, and super-imposed these hand-written words onto the pictures, arranging them as a vignette around each subject.

Almost life-sized prints of these poignant images are produced and displayed in a public gallery to put a human face to these convicts.

View the portraits and read the stories of their remorseful subjects below.
