Artists Ivan Puig and Andrés Padilla Domene have created an awesome handmade car, named the “SEFT-1”, which is designed as an “exploration probe” for tracing the abandoned railways in Mexico and Ecuador.

For two years, they traveled thousands of miles in this customized vehicle, which is equipped with modern sensors and navigation tools—the versatile SEFT-1 can ride on rails and be driven on roads like a regular car.

Documenting their journey on these almost forgotten routes with photographs, videos and found objects, the artists have also interviewed the people and communities who have been affected by the railway closures in 1995.

The stories and data collected would be on display at London’s Furtherfield Gallery from 21 June to 27 July 2014—read more about this ambitious project here.
