Japanese Craftsman Redesigns Chopsticks For People With Hand Disabilities

Based in Fukui, Japan, craftsman Katsuyuki Miyabo has created a special pair of chopsticks for people with hand disabilities, who are not able to handle the eating utensil in its traditional form.

His spring-operated design requires minimal effort to use—one would simply have to grab the conjoined chopsticks and press them together to pick up food. When the pressure is released, the chopsticks would spring apart, and back to its original “open” state.

These chopsticks are made of thicker pieces of wood, so as to allow their users to have a firmer grip on them. Each pair is also custom-made to suit their owner ergonomically.
